What does it mean to trust in Allah (swt)? It means that you rely on Him and depend on Him completly but it also means that you take the means to reach your goal. There are some Muslims who fall into extremes in this understanding of trusting in Allah (swt). Some say that they have put their trust in Allah (swt) but they do not take the means, and others take the means and they rely on themselves but they do not expect Him to help them. They do not trust and rely on Him. Both of these are extremes and both of these are wrong. Insha Allah the correct way is the path in between. We have to try our best and we have to trust in Allah (swt). We have to make the effort but we should never rely on ourselves, rather we should rely on Him.
Allah (swt) is the One Who provides. He gives. But He wants us to make the effort. Look at the example of Musa (as) when he struck the sea with his stick before it parted. Look at the example of Maryam (as) when she had to shake the tree before the dates fell. The Real Power and the result is from Allah (swt). What is from us is only the intention and the effort. This is what He will judge us on and reward us for.
It is also important to note that if you truly have trust in Allah (swt) then you will not do anything haram. You will not do anything forbidden. Why do many of us today have money in a savings account that gives interest, why do many of us miss our Salah because of work, why do many sisters not cover in their workplace, why do sisters even leave their homes and go to work, why do many of us not support the dawah, why do we purchase insurance, why do we lie and cheat? It is because our Trust in Allah (swt) is lacking. We think that we need to violate His Law in order to survive. We do not have that conviction deep in our hearts that He will look after us.
